Present Day Story
27-year-old Sam is a social worker with the local government who, despite the difficulties brought on by what they are exposed to daily, feels in control of life. Spending years coming to terms with their non-binary gender identity has led to them being incredibly in touch with their mental wellness and was one of the reasons they they were driven to be a social worker. Although they are occasionally burdened by the struggles of their clients, Sam does well to cope through actively engaging in professional help, expressing themselves through artistic endeavours, and interacting frequently with their large and strong social support network composed of given and chosen family members.
“I see a lot of difficult things in my day job, but I don’t let it break me. I let it drive me.”
Sam was a competitive runner in university which afforded them scholarships when they first attended university at age 18. Unfortunately, Sam was incredibly unhappy with their life at the time and dropped out only to return at age 28 with more life experience yet, a significantly worse runner. Since graduating four years ago, Sam still runs as their primary form of fitness and has struggled to pay down their loans. Although they don’t make a significant income, Sam has managed to make ends meet and has even been afforded the luxury of living alone.
